What makes Ocean's 8 so great?

All that separates eight women from $150 million is a movie star, the Met Gala, and a heist plan that will probably go wrong at some critical moment. It’s Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean (sister to Danny Ocean of the previous Ocean’s movies) and an ensemble cast of criminal characters that includes Awkwafina, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Rihanna. Their mark, the aforementioned movie star, is played by Anne Hathaway in what is being hailed as a scene stealing performance.

If you think it’s rare to see a blockbuster starring this many women, the stars of Ocean’s 8 agree! “Often you walk on set, and until the hair and makeup people come in, you’re the only woman. So the ratio is 1 to 45? To have more female crew members would be great, but it was so great to have a fantastic, huge female cast” said Cate Blanchett to reporters.

Sandra Bullock is pleased to lead a women centred film, but very aware of the negative, and indeed abusive, reaction to the women led Ghostbusters remake: “That was unfair on a level that I can’t even not be mad about talking about,” Bullock said at the Ocean’s 8 premiere, “They literally walked into a firing squad.”

But Bullock believes it’s time for audiences to grow out of their prejudices: “Let’s back off the meanness. Let’s have a year of kindness. The women are here — we’re not going anywhere.”
